Project Umang
Besides being a short stay home for homeless children to be rehabilitated through adoption, Bal Anand is also a long term home for mentally challenged children and children who could not be adopted. These children are trained to become independent through special schools, speech therapy, physical therapy, vocational therapy as well as therapeutic interventions such as dance, yoga, music, sports, arts, and crafts. Some of the children show outstanding performances in swimming, dancing, and drawing.
Unfortunately, Bal Anand cannot be regarded as a permanent residence for these children. Bal Anand is a children’s home where residents cannot stay beyond eighteen years. Today, Bal Anand hosts four children — three girls and one boy — who are more than eighteen years of age.
This group of 25 children (the numbers are still growing) are of concern to us. While there are many organizations who offer educational, recreational and vocational programmes there are not enough. It is therefore our endeavor to undertake a project where such children turning into adults can live securely. Bal Anand has envisioned a place that is self-supporting where these adults can not only live but become productive.
We have the vision and commitment to serve this very neglected group of mentally and physically challenged children. This new project is called “Umang,” which in Hindi menas, “hope.”
Through your donations we have succeeded in purchasing about 2.5 hectares of land which is semi developed with plantations. The land is about 90 kilometers away from Bal Anand’s current facility. We require funds to further develop this land with housing and count on the goodwill and support of friends to help us with this endeavor, and help the mentally challenged children of Bal Anand, Worldchildren Welfare Trust India.
